The No Limitation

The No Limitation is a hard sci-fi fictional universe meant to be the backdrop of multiple games and works of fiction. This is a collection of all knowledge in this universe, a growing work started early 2024.

The end result of a whole lot of sci-fi future history detailed here is a world in which seven factions of humanity wander the stars in gigantic starships called Dynasties (Dynasty class starships), drawing the power they need from the stars themselves. In this universe of the far future the factions war with each other in skirmishes over resources and honor. Together humanity also fights a difficult battle with a species of living starships called Tholians - which seem to be mindlessly bent on the total destruction of all humanity.

The name comes from the father of most super-tech in the fiction, commonly known simply as Dr. No. The No Limitation is a specific speed value (measured relative to the speed of light) beyond which the DID (Differential Inertial Drive) will not safely operate.

Dr. No

Dr. No was a human physicist who studied the Tannhauser Gate and uncovered some of it's science. Many details of Dr. No have slipped away by the many centuries that have passed. In face, Dr. No's real name was likely Dr. Nomura or Dr. Nakamura, and after many heated debates it's been accepted that Dr. No will do as an alias for modern purposes. His work on these studies of the gate eventually led to the development of modern super-tech such as the DID (Differential Inertial Drive) and the MPPD (Multi-Phased Pulse Drive) that allows interstellar travel in starships.

The Tannhauser Gate

A 4.7 km wide circular gate discovered in space orbiting Proxima Centauri. After much study it became obvious the gate was a wormhole device to allow travel beyond the speed of light. It was specifically left to be found by a species as an educational stepping stone, likely from another advanced race that left this area of space behind. Dr. No made numerous studies of the gate and eventually learned much of it's science. Other scientists eventually made it operational, at first as a light window, which allowed direct observation of far away locations. Using this mode, Neoterra - Earth 2, was discovered and an exodus from the ruined Old Earth to Neoterra began. The No Theorem was also published as a paper by Dr. No at this time, where he very specifically detailed how unstable the gate design was and that eventually after a specific amount of usage it would destroy itself. This eventually proved true, and the Tannhauser Terminus occurred, ending up with the total destruction of the gate and any future use. As Neoterra was very very far from Old Earth, this meant humanity ended up thriving on the world of Neoterra alone.

The Tannhauser Terminus

The self-destruction of the Tannhauser Gate left a powerful imprint on humanity. Suddenly about 20% of humanity was lost back on Old Earth, while the remainder of which lived on Neoterra with a much brighter future. Dr. No himself was changed even though he had predicted the Terminus event. He spent most of the rest of his life researching the Neo star system that contained Neoterra. Once he learned about minor instability in the star Neo, the star that Neoterra orbited, he wrote The No Conjecture. This paper suggested that Neoterra was no ultimately safe and the only true secure way forward for human civilization was to become a starship based species. He proposed humanity become a space nomadic fleet, and roam from star to star across the cosmos.
