The No Limitation

- wishray.net - The Seven Dynasties - Subsector Gamma -

The No Limitation is a hard sci-fi fictional universe meant to be the backdrop of multiple games and works of fiction. This is a collection of all knowledge in this universe, a growing work started early 2024.

The end result of a whole lot of sci-fi future history detailed here is a world in which seven factions of humanity wander the stars in gigantic starships called Dynasties (Dynasty class starships), drawing the power they need from the stars themselves. In this universe of the far future the factions war with each other in skirmishes over resources and honor. Together humanity also fights a difficult battle with a species of living starships called Tholians - which seem to be mindlessly bent on the total destruction of all humanity.

The name comes from the father of most super-tech in the fiction, commonly known simply as Dr. No. The No Limitation is a specific speed value (measured relative to the speed of light) beyond which the DID (Differential Inertial Drive) will not safely operate.

Dr. No

Dr. No was a human physicist who studied the Tannhauser Gate and uncovered some of it's science. Many details of Dr. No have slipped away by the many centuries that have passed. In face, Dr. No's real name was likely Dr. Nomura or Dr. Nakamura, and after many heated debates it's been accepted that Dr. No will do as an alias for modern purposes. His work on these studies of the gate eventually led to the development of modern super-tech such as the DID (Differential Inertial Drive) and the MPPD (Multi-Phased Pulse Drive) that allows interstellar travel in starships.

The Tannhauser Gate

A 4.7 km wide circular gate discovered in space orbiting Proxima Centauri. After much study it became obvious the gate was a wormhole device to allow travel beyond the speed of light. It was specifically left to be found by a species as an educational stepping stone, likely from another advanced race that left this area of space behind. Dr. No made numerous studies of the gate and eventually learned much of it's science. Other scientists eventually made it operational, at first as a light window, which allowed direct observation of far away locations. Using this mode, Neoterra - Earth 2, was discovered and an exodus from the ruined Old Earth to Neoterra began. The No Theorem was also published as a paper by Dr. No at this time, where he very specifically detailed how unstable the gate design was and that eventually after a specific amount of usage it would destroy itself. This eventually proved true, and the Tannhauser Terminus occurred, ending up with the total destruction of the gate and any future use. As Neoterra was very very far from Old Earth, this meant humanity ended up thriving on the world of Neoterra alone.

The Tannhauser Terminus

The self-destruction of the Tannhauser Gate left a powerful imprint on humanity. Suddenly about 20% of humanity was lost back on Old Earth, while the remainder of which lived on Neoterra with a much brighter future. Dr. No himself was changed even though he had predicted the Terminus event. He spent most of the rest of his life researching the Neo star system that contained Neoterra. Once he learned about minor instability in the star Neo, the star that Neoterra orbited, he wrote The No Conjecture. This paper suggested that Neoterra was no ultimately safe and the only true secure way forward for human civilization was to become a starship based species. He proposed humanity become a space nomadic fleet, and roam from star to star across the cosmos.

Dr. Mina Monari and the MPPD

A particularly talented physicist named Mina Monari continued Dr. No's work some years after his passing. While he had worked out the general method of the MPPD (Multi-Phased Pulse Drive) many issues still remained to make it a viable technology. It took years of work but she unraveled the remaining questions (most at least) and a working MPPD was created. With this device extending the abilities of a starhip's DID (Differential Inertial Drive), it could 'jump' across space in an instant, in a manner consistent with the science behind the Tannhauser Gate. Some people even today call this the Monari Drive, after her work on the device.

The Dangers of the Dark Age

One might suspect that with the creation of the DID and the MPPD, now humanity would take flight across the stars and spread it's interstellar wings. If so, one would be wrong. A huge problem remained with both technologies, and that was the immense power requirements to operate them. While the DID could be run at 1/3 speed with the output of a very large and impressive nuclear reactor, the sudden power requirements of the MPPD where simply not attainable with that kind of power source. Eventually after creating a many kilometer large capture sphere simply called a Matrix, the first MPPD jump was made. The power source within the Matrix: a thermonuclear bomb of a scale that is hard to imagine, the Matrix capturing it's output energy (with loss of several percent doing damage to the Matrix itself) and funneling that into the DID to power the MPPD and allow a jump.

This allowed jumping but with a very real risk - about 5% of Matrix captures failed and instead blew apart the Matrix itself sending irradiated masses of metal and ores across the Neo star system. The Matrix was only capable of powering a pair of jumps, one to the destination and then one back later, but holding the return jump energy in the DID had it's own risks. During this dark age the exploration of space around the Neo system was made at the cost of many lives and the creation of many issues to rear their head later.

This made many people question the worth of all this exploration, and humanity started to form two primary factions: those that wished to just remain and live on Neoterra, managing their population levels and mastery renewable energy; and those that said damn the costs and humanity must reach the new step in existence as a starfaring species. The latter group levied The No Conjecture as a powerful old text backing up their goals.
